Our Goals
We are committed to reducing the carbon footprint of our fleet and operations and minimising waste generated in our direct operations.
Sysco Ireland are working to set a local decarbonisation strategy for Ireland for 2035 and 2050. To help us set targets, we have invested in technology that accurately tracks our carbon footprint across all parts of the business, analysing the data and identifies effective carbon reduction strategies.
Fleet
Sysco’s sales fleet is EV or Hybrid cars, and we are working to transition our truck fleet to HVO. This transition will save over 8,128 tonnes of carbon emissions.
To ensure that the Sysco’s fleet operates in the most efficient manner possible, we use powerful software route planning tool technology which minimizes travel miles. We use a fleet management system which allows complete transparency of real time fuel levels and predictions for the next order enabling optimum fleet efficiency.
The technology and mandatory Eco Driving Courses that Sysco drivers complete help us streamline our deliveries, reduce food miles, and make our daily deliveries more fuel efficient.
Energy
Sysco’s Dublin Head Quarters generates 1,000 kwh output from the 2,249 Photo Voltaic solar panels on its roof. In 2023, the output supplied 13% of the energy required for the operation, saving the equivalent to almost 300 tonnes of Co2. All other energy requirements throughout our Ireland operations are fuelled by the purchase of 100% renewable energy.
The new Nutts Corner site in Belfast opening in 2025, is being designed to BREEM standards with sustainability & energy efficiency at the forefront. Sysco Limerick has undergone an extensive renovation and has been upgraded with sustainability at the forefront including LED lighting and EV chargers.
Waste - Surplus Food Programme
Sysco is a zero waste to landfill operation. To reduce any food waste throughout our operations, we have created a ‘War on Waste’ initiative which identifies potential food waste up to 7 weeks ahead of food expiration dates and undertakes actions to reduce this potential waste at source.
When the steps of the War on Waste initiative have been implemented, we work with Food Cloud & FareShare to manage any remaining surplus food we have. We share Food Cloud’s vision that no good food should go to waste and so we work closely to ensure that our surplus food is shared with community organisations through Food Cloud and FareShare, helping to support those in need across Ireland and avoiding over 1,500 tons of carbon emissions since we started working with them.
Food that isn’t suitable for human consumption is further diverted to Dublin and Belfast Zoos for animal feed and any remainder is sent to FSM for anaerobic digestion and the creation of renewable energy for the national grid.
