Our commitment to corporate social responsibility is divided into three pillars: People, Products and Planet. According to these principles, we care for the people who make up our organisation, source products and services responsibly and reduce our impact on the environment wherever possible.

Together, we can build a more sustainable future for everyone.

People

Being in a strategic position to make a real, lasting difference in others’ lives is a responsibility we take seriously, and it’s our privilege to use our resources to help those who need a little extra help and support.

Products

Here at Sysco, we pride ourselves on our products, and it is our responsibility to ensure product quality, safety and sustainability for our customers.

Planet

Sysco is committed to both promoting sustainability and protecting our environment at a local and global level.

OUR ENERGY, CARBON & WASTE INITIATIVES

Our Partnership with FoodCloud

Sysco has been a proud supporter of the FoodCloud initiative since 2015. Through this partnership, we assist FoodCloud in redistributing our surplus food to local charities across the country.

  • We donate 1-2 tonnes of food per week to FoodCloud
  • Since 2015, we have donated over 835,000 meals to the value of over €1 million

Diversity, Equity & Inclusion

At Sysco, we understand that our people come from diverse backgrounds, carrying with them a wealth of knowledge, insights and experiences.

We’ve implemented a number of colleague support groups across the organisation including IMPACT – a support group that works to empower female identifying colleagues across Sysco.

Learning & Development

We have a number of Development programmes available to further develop our colleagues’ careers at Sysco. These include:

  • A tuition reimbursement programme

  • Graduate Programmes for both Operations and Finance

  • A Logistics Apprenticeship programme

  • Commercial Driver Apprenticeship

Colleagues also have access to a range of technical and personal development courses throughout the year as well as our 24/7 web-based learning management system Thrive.

Health & Wellness Initiatives

The health and wellbeing of our staff is of vital importance to Sysco. Without a healthy workforce, we cannot reach our full potential. Our range of initiatives  include:

  • Employee Assistance Programme – which  provides free support and information on health and wellbeing for all colleagues and their families
  • Employee Engagement Platform – which  supports the mental and physical health of our team through fitness activities, mindfulness, events and competitions
  • Mental Health First Aid programme – which ensures that we have fully trained colleagues in the organisation who can support others
  • Chef Cookalongs – where Sysco colleagues join Development Chef Simon in preparing and cooking delicious seasonal dishes
  • Our partnership with Workit – which provides weekly discounts for Sysco colleagues including money-saving deals on events, shopping and days out

Sourcing Locally

We are partnered with over 350 producers and growers around the island of Ireland, meaning 70% of our own product range is sourced locally.

Sustainability & Innovation

Our commitment to partnering with local suppliers also extends to working with them on improving environmental and animal welfare practices.

ABP FOOD GROUP

Our long-standing partnership with ABP Food Group – one of Europe’s leading privately owned agribusiness companies – is a great example of how Sysco works with suppliers to promote sustainable practices. For more information, click here.

Health & Organics

We track market trends and consumer preferences to source products which promote healthy living, such as our wide range of vegetarian, vegan, free-from and organic products. We also work towards educating our customers in the latest food trends and products through Masterclass sessions with our development chefs.

Origin Green

Sysco has been a verified member of Origin Green since 2018 – Ireland’s national sustainability programme for the food and drink industry. We undergo regular annual audits to track our progress.

Zero Waste To Landfill

100% of our waste products are either recycled or, in the case of food waste, is contributed to a local initiative for anaerobic biodegradation.

Reusable Crates

In 2018, we commenced a trial of replacing the cardboard boxes used throughout the business with reusable plastic crates. Since then we have removed 1.3 million cardboard boxes from circulation, replacing them 150,000 reusable plastic crates from our delivery network.

Reducing Food Miles

Our dedicated planning team uses Roadnet – a logistics management system which helps minimise travel and increase efficiencies. This maps and plans the route network for deliveries throughout the country, ensuring an optimal delivery cycle for customers. We also operate  a ‘back-haul’ programme to reduce food miles for our suppliers.

Our Delivery Fleet

Sysco trucks use Euro V and Euro VI engines which offer cleaner burning to ensure lower emissions. On top of this, we have also introduced the following upgrades:

  • Stop/start technology to help conserve fuel
  • Refrigeration systems that are quieter and more efficient
  • Tyres that allow for second and third life usage
  • On board camera equipment to increase public safety
  • Verizon Software – a telematics system to coach drivers in best driving practices in order to reduce vehicle wear and improve the fuel mileage

Our Sales Fleet

Energy-efficient tyres help keep our car fleet eco-friendly, and in an effort to push this even further, we are currently in the process of moving our entire car fleet to hybrids.

Electric Charging Points

As part of our rollout of electric company cars across our fleet, we’re installing electric charging points at our Dublin and Cork locations.

DSU And DS3 Schemes

In a partnership with Eirgrid, we contribute to the DSU and DS3 schemes which help in reducing nationwide energy consumption.

Rainwater Harvesting

By collecting 3,000 to 4,000 cubic litres of rainwater in the garage area of the Dublin HQ, we can then redistribute this valuable resource for maintenance purposes throughout the site.

Beehives & Flower Planting

A beehive was recently installed at our Dublin location by an award-winning local honey manufacturer, to encourage a thriving bee population. We have also planted a wildflower meadow in the land next to the beehive to help support biodiversity and encourage pollination.

New Solar Panels

By the end of 2021, we’ll have installed new solar panels in the Dublin HQ, where powerful megawatt bulbs will create energy savings as well as reduced emissions.

LED Lighting In Office Areas

State of the art LED lighting is being introduced to our office areas, saving on our overall energy consumption.
